The Intelligent Design Prizes in Viruses
There is much to praise in the design of viruses, the most parsimonious of microbes. With economy of force, stripped down to the very basics of virulence, they do the most with the fewest resources, hijacking help from the very adversary they are pitted against. With the irony of jujutsu, they not only evade the host’s immune system but often trick it into neutralizing the host.
The defining characteristic of viruses is their absolute
dependence on a living host for recovery and reconstitution: they function only by entering cells and using the cell components to achieve their objectives.
